The Tinsmith Museum Fyrry
The Tinsmith Museum Fyrry
In Vähäkyrö’s Fyrry – The Tinsmith Museum old craft traditions come alive in an experiential way. In 2018, Fyrry received new facilities that serve as a craft museum, work display, workshop, and meeting facilities.
The good chemistry between Fyrry and the Kuopio-based designer furniture brand, Palad, was created when Fyrry needed multi-purpose loose and fixed furniture that could be adapted to various exhibitions and uses. Fyrry’s museum exhibition is renewed from time to time, so the museum’s furniture must be able to be modified to display museum objects of different sizes and shapes.
Palad’s ORTOBOX™ tables were chosen as exhibition tables for Fyrry. ORTOBOX has portal adjustable legs that can be folded under the tabletop. Thanks to its legs, the multi-purpose table can easily be set at several different heights and on floor level, so both large and small museum objects can be placed on the tables in a representative manner.
Handy ORTOBOX tables are easy to adjust to a suitable working height for both children and adults. Participants of all sizes are comfortable working at the tables in Fyrry’s workshops, where the participants make, for example, gingerbread molds out of tin. The tables can also be adjusted for seating height, so meetings organized at the premises can be held around the tables.
When the legs of the tables are folded under the tabletop, the ORTOBOX tables can be stacked on top of each other. This frees up floor space for, for example, large-sized exhibits, machines, and the audience of tinsmiths’ work demonstrations. The multi-purpose ORTOBOX tables are suitable for both public spaces and private homes. All Palad design furniture is designed and manufactured in Finland.
Palad custom-designed a stage located in the middle of the museum space, which is reserved for the work shows of the tinsmiths´. The platform is the same height as the ORTOBOX table at its minimum height, which brings unity to the loose and fixed furniture.
For the walls of the museum space, Palad designed made-to-measure multi-purpose flap tables, the table tops of which can be converted into large and small table space needs. Folding tables can be used to place museum objects or catering for meetings, and they can be used as work surfaces during workshops.
The stage and clapboards were treated with Palad’s standard coatings, as well as ORTOBOX’s material and color scheme was adapted to match custom-made furniture and the overall interior design language.
As a final touch, Palad designed a signature lamp for Fyrry, which is the opening for Palad’s upcoming lighting series. The FYRRY lamp follows the shape of a traditional toy, the fyrry. By blowing the whistle of the Fyrry toy, the wheel, which is made of tin, turns.
Like its predecessor, the FYRRY lamp is made of sheet metal. The striking lamp sparkles and shines like a living fire and emphasizes the workshop-like atmosphere of the Fyrry Museum, which follows the artisan tradition.
Master tinsmiths in Vähäkyrö make FYRRY lamps by hand using the same traditional methods used to make the fyrry -toys. The FYRRY lamp can be used both as a ceiling and wall lamp.
The designers of Palad, Kuopio-based artist-architect duo Partanen & Lamusuo, also served as the architectural designers for Fyrry.
Palad designers, Kuopio-based artist-architect couple Partanen & Lamusuo, also work as Fyrry’s architectural designers. The uniform appearance of the furniture, made of warm-toned wood, and the tones of the surface materials chosen for the museum space create an atmospheric experience.
Partanen & Lamusuo brought the feel of the material and a sense of craftsmanship and workshop to the space. In addition to warm-toned wood, Partanen & Lamusuo chose sheet metal for the interior. The local tinsmiths manufactured the sheet metal covering of the walls and roof based on the plan of Partanen & Lamusuo. In the museum, you can get to know both the history of the tinsmith tradition and the present-day tinsmiths’ skills.
In the furniture and interior design, Partanen & Lamusuo comprehensively took into account the different purposes of the space and created a whole that presents the know-how of sheet metal smiths, and the history of tinsmith´s craftsmanship in a fresh, modern, and experiential way.
