BioRex Tornio charms with a flowing design

The spaces at BioRex Tornio guide visitors into the world of cinema even before entering the theatre. A recessed area along the corridor of the Rajalla shopping centre feels like a movie scene, completed by the custom-made REX HARD bench from the Palad design furniture brand.

Custom-made to fit the recess perfectly, the bench’s warm wood tones and wedge-shaped form invite visitors to sit. Designed to withstand heavy use in public spaces, the REX SLICE HARD provides a comfortable seat depth for users of all heights and is available in three sizes.

The recess offers a cozy spot for relaxing or charging a phone. The BioRex logo on the wall crowns the composition, creating a backdrop that encourages visitors to capture and share the moment on social media.

Flowing design

Upon entering, a high lobby opens up, with a centrally arranged lounge area inviting visitors to sit and immerse themselves in the cinematic atmosphere. A gentle rhythm was created in the BioRex Tornio spaces using Palad design furniture, including the circular TUMA sofa, TUMA-R stool, and sleek REX ARC chairs.

In this flowing space, the furniture does not interrupt sightlines, allowing the composition to breathe freely. Hanging lights, combined with the inviting furniture, define the area and give it its own identity while maintaining a visual connection to the surrounding lobby.

A modern campfire in the heart of the lobby

For BioRex Tornio, a low, backless Palad TUMA sofa was chosen to encourage casual gatherings and playful interaction. The circular TUMA functions like a modern campfire, drawing people together around it. Children and teens tuck their legs inward on the sofa, bringing life and a sense of community to the space. With varying seat depths, the sofa ensures a comfortable and suitable place for everyone.

The TUMA sofa is a master of versatility: different centre modules allow it to be customized to fit the space and the needs of its users. The upholstered backrest offers a comfortable spot to rest, while the convenient tabletop serves as a place to set down a coffee. A book or magazine rack makes the TUMA sofa an ideal solution for waiting areas and lobbies.

The Palad TUMA-R stool in the waiting area is a versatile piece for public spaces, functioning as a single seat or a footrest. Available in three sizes, TUMA-R stools can be grouped to create lively seating arrangements, while the version with a lid provides stylish storage.

Silver unifies the whole

The design of the Palad REX ARC chair, originally created for BioRex Porvoo, continues its story in Tornio. The wedge-shaped REX ARC chairs bring flexibility and dynamism to the BioRex Tornio lobby: they can be arranged in straight lines, curves, circular formations, or organic shapes.

The lounge and lobby furniture is upholstered in silver-colored faux leather, which shimmers beautifully and visually ties the furniture composition together. Palad furniture creates a recognizable look for BioRex theatres, enhancing the overall immersive experience of the space.

BOX elevates the cinema experience

The sleek, dark-gray Palad BOX ottomans add appeal to the front rows of the BioRex Tornio cinema halls. Viewers can comfortably rest their feet on the BOX seat ottomans and immerse themselves in the film in an ergonomic viewing position.

The cubic design of the BOX ottomans brings clarity and order to the space. The minimalist design allows for easy placement and combination, and the graphite-gray colour aligns with the signature colour palette of BioRex theatres. The versatile BOX ottoman can also be used as a seat.

At BioRex Tornio, the BOX ottomans were given a new scale alongside their cubic design. They were adapted to meet the needs of the cinema halls, halved in size so that viewers in the central rows can also enjoy the comfort and ergonomic support provided by the BOX ottomans. The new scale preserves ease of movement while adding a touch of luxury to the cinema experience.

Design that turns BioRex into an experience

BioRex cinemas offer an experience where comfort, visual aesthetics, and glamour meet outstanding acoustics. While each theatre is unique, all share a strong identity rooted in the visual concept created in the early 2000s by Partanen & Lamusuo and BioRex.

BioRex’s recognizable look is built around Palad design furniture. The furniture’s design and materials harmonize with the brand’s color palette—bronze, silver, and midnight blue—creating a cohesive and immersive environment.

Some results of the collaboration between Partanen & Lamusuo and BioRex are entirely new theatres, while others are renovated classics where the spaces’ history meets modern experiential design. The common thread in all theatres is a wow experience, realized uniquely in each location.

Palad furniture is designed with a purpose

In the design of Palad’s furniture for public spaces, durability, closeness to nature, and timeless aesthetics are emphasized—values that support BioRex’s principles and customer experience. The aim is to create spaces where viewers can relax and enjoy the film with all their senses.

“Our design philosophy always starts from real needs: spaces, people, and intended use. We design furniture to adapt to different spaces and users, taking into account both physical proportions and the multifunctional nature of spaces,” say Palad brand lead designers Jaana Partanen and Heikki Lamusuo.

Accessibility, adaptability, and longevity are key priorities in the design process.

“Empathetic design is our core idea. We want the furniture we design to leave an empathetic footprint in the world. This is reflected in ecological choices such as local production, the use of renewable materials, and ease of maintenance,” explain Palad designers Jaana and Heikki.

Social responsibility is expressed through inclusive design that does not exclude anyone. Locality is part of the Palad brand identity—the furniture is manufactured in Finland in collaboration with local producers, supporting both regional vitality and sustainable development.
